In a shocking development from Long Island, New York, a school bus driver has been formally charged with the kidnapping and rape of a student passenger. The case has drawn significant attention due to the grave nature of the allegations and the breach of trust involved.
Giovanny Campos, 50, also known by the alias Giovanny Guzman, is at the center of this disturbing case. Campos, who was employed by Cheese Bus, Inc., is accused of sexually assaulting a female student from Valley Stream multiple times between January and July. The Nassau County District Attorney, Anne T. Donnelly, announced the indictment, which includes charges of second-degree kidnapping, third-degree rape, two counts of a third-degree criminal sex act, and reckless endangerment.
The indictment alleges that Campos engaged in sexual abuse both on the school bus and at his apartment in Queens. The abuse reportedly occurred multiple times, including instances in a parking lot while still on the bus. Following these allegations, Campos was arrested on September 28, 2023, by the Nassau County Police's Special Victims Squad.
During his court appearance, Campos pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court has set his bail at $150,000 cash, $300,000 bond, and $1.25 million partially secured bond. If convicted, Campos could face up to 25 years in prison.
Cheese Bus, Inc. has terminated Campos' employment in light of the charges. The company issued a statement through its attorney emphasizing its commitment to safety and security within the community. It has assured full cooperation with local law enforcement and removed Campos from all bus routes and any contact with passengers.
The case has sparked a broader conversation about the safety of students and the responsibilities of those entrusted with their care. Thomas Giuffra, Esq., a renowned sexual assault attorney, highlighted the importance of civil lawsuits in holding negligent parties accountable. Giuffra stressed that civil lawsuits allow survivors and their families to seek compensation for damages and play a crucial role in ensuring institutional accountability.
The community and legal teams are closely watching this case's developments. The Nassau County District Attorney's Office has urged anyone with additional information or who may have been victimized by Campos to come forward. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for stringent safety protocols in school transportation.
As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on seeking justice for the victim and ensuring such a breach of trust does not occur again. The case against Giovanny Campos is a sobering example of the vulnerabilities within systems meant to protect children and the ongoing efforts to strengthen those protections.
