A man who presented himself as a spiritual healer and tarot card reader—Jairo Cesar Vasquez Garzon, also known as “Rafael the Grand Warlock”—is now facing serious criminal charges for allegedly sexually abusing multiple women during his so-called healing sessions in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Garzon, 57, was associated with a group called Missionaries of the Light, advertising his mystical services through radio promotions. At least one survivor reported hearing one of these ads and scheduling an appointment, seeking spiritual help—only to become the target of horrifying abuse.
According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, the survivor described that her first few appointments involved prayer, but Garzon quickly introduced disturbing and manipulative behaviors. He allegedly told her that whatever happened in the room had to remain private, setting the stage for coercion and silence.
On her fourth visit, Garzon reportedly wrapped her in a blanket, sprayed a liquid over her entire body, and caused her to lose consciousness. When she awoke, she discovered she was being sexually assaulted. This survivor’s courage in reporting the incident led investigators to reopen a similar prior complaint lodged more than a year earlier.
Garzon has been charged with:
First-degree felony object rape
Second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse
Officials believe there may be additional victims who encountered Garzon under the guise of healing or spiritual services. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill emphasized the importance of survivor reports and praised the investigative team for connecting multiple allegations into a consolidated case.
“The most important part of supporting a survivor is to start by believing them,” said Gill.
Unfortunately, this case highlights a disturbing trend: abuse under the pretense of spiritual guidance. Whether disguised as therapy, healing, or religious ritual, sexual predators can exploit trust and vulnerability—especially when survivors are seeking comfort or answers during personal crises.
