In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked New Yorkers and raised serious concerns about public safety, a man has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a deceased individual on a New York City subway train. The event underscores the critical need for enhanced security measures in public transportation systems and the importance of supporting survivors of abuse.
On April 9, 2025, just after midnight, the New York City Police Department responded to reports of a man engaging in sexual acts with an unresponsive individual aboard a southbound R train near the Whitehall Street station in Lower Manhattan. Investigations revealed that the victim had boarded the train around 8 p.m. and was already deceased by the time the suspect boarded at approximately 11 p.m. Before the alleged sexual assault, the suspect reportedly searched the deceased man's pockets. Authorities have confirmed that the victim likely died of natural causes.
Following a thorough investigation and a citywide manhunt, the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Felix Rojas of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, turned himself in to the police on April 27, 2025. He has since been arrested and charged with first-degree rape. Rojas is expected to be arraigned soon, though his legal representation has not yet commented on the case.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage and fear among commuters and city residents, highlighting the vulnerabilities within the public transportation system. The fact that such an act could occur on a subway train raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the need for increased surveillance and patrols to ensure passenger safety.
