With just weeks remaining before a federal trial in New York, prominent music industry figure Antonio "L.A." Reid will move forward without legal representation, according to statements from the court. U.S. District Judge Jeannette A. Vargas confirmed Reid’s “pro se” status during a recent hearing, indicating he has lost his legal team and now faces the case alone unless new counsel steps in quickly.
The high-profile lawsuit was filed by Drew Dixon, a former A&R executive at Arista Records, who accuses Reid of sexually assaulting her on two separate occasions in the early 2000s. The suit was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily revived the statute of limitations for survivors of sexual misconduct to seek justice through civil courts.
In her complaint, Dixon claims the abuse began shortly after Reid became CEO of Arista in 2000. She alleges the first incident occurred aboard a private plane in 2001, where Reid allegedly kissed her and digitally penetrated her without consent. A second assault allegedly followed months later in the back of a private car, this time in front of Reid’s driver.
Dixon also says that after rejecting his advances, Reid retaliated professionally — sabotaging promising talent she brought to the label, including artists who later became global stars like Kanye West and John Legend.
Reid’s previous attorneys denied the allegations and argued that claims of lost commissions were not actionable under the statute of limitations. However, Judge Vargas ruled that Dixon may be allowed to pursue lost commissions under specific legal claims recognized by the Adult Survivors Act.
During the status conference, Reid’s outgoing legal team from Kinsella Holley Iser Kump Steinsapir LLP said they would assist any new attorney in onboarding but emphasized that Reid had not paid them since February. Despite owning property in Bel-Air, California, Reid has reportedly been unable to liquidate assets to fund his legal defense.
Judge Vargas made it clear that Reid’s presence is mandatory at the August 25 pre-trial conference, and failure to appear could result in a default judgment. The trial date is currently set for September 8.
This case underscores the importance of New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which provides a path to justice for individuals whose trauma may have delayed their ability to come forward. By temporarily reviving civil claims, the Act empowers survivors to hold even the most powerful individuals accountable.
