The Harvey Weinstein case is one of the most high-profile sexual abuse scandals in modern history. Once a Hollywood powerbroker, Weinstein has faced decades of allegations from dozens of women, including actresses, assistants, and aspiring talents. His trials — and partial convictions — in both New York and California represent a milestone for survivors everywhere. Though justice has been partial and slow, the legal consequences he now faces have shifted public understanding of sexual abuse, accountability, and survivors' rights.
For survivors in New York still seeking justice for sexual abuse, Thomas Giuffra, Esq. – The Abuse Lawyer NY stands as a trusted advocate.
Sciorra testified that Weinstein raped her in her Manhattan apartment. Although the statute of limitations prevented criminal charges, her testimony supported the charge of predatory sexual assault during the 2020 Manhattan trial.
From the forced oral sex described by Lucia Evans in 2004, to the harrowing account of Mimi Haley in 2006, and alleged rape of Jessica Mann in 2013, the pattern of coercion and violence was clear. Several of these allegations became the foundation for criminal charges in both New York and California.
Weinstein was formally charged in Manhattan in 2018 and surrendered to police. A year later, Los Angeles prosecutors also charged him with multiple counts of rape and assault. In February 2020, he was convicted in New York of criminal sexual act and third-degree rape and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
In October 2022, Weinstein stood trial again, this time in Los Angeles. He was convicted of rape and other charges, based largely on testimony from one accuser. In February 2023, he received an additional 16-year sentence, to be served consecutively after his New York term.
In April 2024, the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 conviction due to improper admission of testimony from women whose allegations were not part of the case. Despite this setback, Manhattan prosecutors swiftly moved forward with a new trial, supported by fresh allegations and an updated indictment.
During his third New York trial, which began in April 2025, Weinstein faced accusations from three women, including former model Kaja Sokola and Miriam “Mimi” Haley, whose 2006 testimony helped secure one of the few consistent convictions against Weinstein.
On June 11, 2025, a Manhattan jury found Weinstein guilty of first-degree criminal sexual act for his assault on Haley. The jury was hung on the third count, related to Jessica Mann. When deliberations failed, the court declared a mistrial on June 12. Prosecutors have confirmed they will seek yet another trial to fully resolve the remaining charges.
The Harvey Weinstein case underscores the power of survivor voices — and the importance of a strong legal strategy. Survivors who once felt silenced are now seen and heard. Still, the complexity of these cases shows why having an experienced, trauma-informed sexual abuse attorney is essential.
