In a series of disturbing allegations, more than two dozen lawsuits have been filed against Four Winds Hospitals, psychiatric facilities located in Katonah and Saratoga Springs, New York. The lawsuits, filed in Westchester County, accuse the hospitals of failing to protect minors from sexual abuse by staff members over a span of years.
The lawsuits detail incidents of sexual abuse occurring between the late 2000s and 2020, involving patients as young as six years old. Plaintiffs allege that staff members engaged in inappropriate conduct, including groping patients during showers, forced sexual acts, and threats to prolong hospitalization if victims reported the abuse.
Attorney Amber Long, representing many of the plaintiffs, emphasized the vulnerability of the victims: "They have no power in places like these, and they're so helpless at the hands of these abusers."
The lawsuits accuse Four Winds Hospitals of creating an environment where sexual misconduct was tolerated and enabled. Allegations include the failure to investigate reports of abuse, neglecting to report incidents as required by law, and engaging in deceptive practices. In one case, a 14-year-old boy was allegedly sedated and abused by a staff member when he requested outdoor activities.
Four Winds Hospitals have denied the allegations and have filed responses seeking dismissal of the complaints. However, the cases are still in their early stages, with plaintiffs and their legal representatives gathering evidence and testimonies to support their claims.
Survivors of sexual abuse at psychiatric facilities like Four Winds Hospitals have the right to pursue legal action against both the perpetrators and the institutions that failed to protect them. Civil lawsuits can provide compensation for emotional distress, medical expenses, and other damages resulting from the abuse.
It's crucial for survivors to understand their legal rights and the timeframes within which they can file claims. Consulting with an experienced attorney can help navigate these complex legal processes and ensure that survivors receive the justice they deserve.
Beyond legal representation, Survivors of Abuse NY connects clients with counseling services and support networks to aid in their healing journey. We believe in a holistic approach to recovery, addressing both the legal and emotional needs of survivors.
