A former Butler Tech educator has been sentenced in a disturbing case involving child sexual abuse material in Warren County, Ohio. On Wednesday, David Kenneth Campbell, 57, of Mason, was sentenced by Judge Robert Peeler to:
Five years of probation
60 days in jail
200 hours of community service
Mandatory participation in a sexual offender treatment program
Additionally, Campbell has been designated a Tier II sex offender, which requires him to register his address every 180 days for 25 years with his local sheriff’s office.
Following a trial, Campbell was found guilty of the following charges:
9 counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor
14 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance
The sentence also requires Campbell to forfeit his laptop and external hard drive, both of which are to be disposed of by the Mason Police Department.
Campbell had a long-standing role in education. He began working at Butler Tech in August 2010 and most recently served as the director of robotics, engineering, aviation, and manufacturing. According to Butler Tech spokesperson AJ Huff, Campbell was placed on administrative leave on August 19, 2024, and subsequently retired.
Records from the State Board of Education confirm that Campbell's five-year professional vocational education license expired on June 30, which aligns with his departure from the school system.
This case is part of a troubling pattern of educators and school staff being implicated in child exploitation cases. Individuals like Campbell hold positions of trust and authority over minors, making their actions particularly devastating.
When schools and education administrators fail to properly vet or monitor employees, it puts vulnerable children at risk of abuse. Survivors of these crimes may carry the emotional trauma for years, or even decades.
