An alarming incident in Cicero, New York, has brought renewed attention to the issue of public safety and the need for survivor-centered legal support. Authorities have charged a man with multiple offenses following a reported sexual assault inside the women's restroom of a Walmart store located on Brewerton Road.
According to law enforcement, the incident took place on January 4, 2025. A female employee of the store entered the women's restroom, where she unexpectedly encountered the suspect, later identified as Galindo Lopez-Lopez. The man was reportedly washing his hands when the woman walked in. She attempted to leave, but Lopez-Lopez allegedly forced himself into the stall, locked the door behind them, and exposed himself. Fortunately, the woman was able to fight her way out and alert authorities.
Lopez-Lopez was arrested the following day and now faces charges including first-degree sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and forcible touching. The case is currently under investigation by the Cicero Police Department.
Incidents like this one underscore the vulnerabilities that exist in everyday settings such as supermarkets, schools, and public transportation. These are spaces where individuals should feel safe, yet assaults continue to occur—often catching victims by surprise and leaving them emotionally scarred.
Survivors of Abuse NY, led by Thomas Giuffra, Esq., is committed to helping victims of sexual abuse seek justice through the civil legal system. While criminal proceedings may address the state's role in prosecuting offenders, civil lawsuits provide survivors with the opportunity to obtain financial compensation for emotional trauma, medical costs, and other losses.
“We believe that every survivor has the right to pursue justice, regardless of where or when the abuse occurred,” said Thomas Giuffra, Esq. “Public safety must include accountability, and that’s where civil litigation plays a crucial role.”
Victims of sexual assault in public or commercial establishments may have grounds to pursue not only claims against the individual offender but also premises liability lawsuits against the establishment if security measures were lacking or negligence contributed to the incident.
At Survivors of Abuse NY, we offer compassionate, confidential consultations to evaluate your legal options. Our legal team understands the trauma that comes with abuse and is dedicated to supporting you every step of the way.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse in a public space or commercial business, we urge you to reach out. Survivors of Abuse NY provides the legal support you need to reclaim your power and hold perpetrators accountable.
