Johnson’s voice shook as she spoke, but her resolve was unwavering. She said her mission was “to make sure we are treated as human beings and given the right to safety, the right to exist.”

Just weeks later, Johnson’s attorneys learned she had passed away on June 13, six days before her story was published. Her attorney, Sonia Allahdad, said she last spoke with Johnson the day before her death, when Johnson mentioned needing to move due to smoke from the Canadian wildfires worsening her condition.

A Legacy of Courage Amid Institutional Abuse

Johnson’s lawsuit against the State of New York was filed in 2023 under the Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for adult victims of sexual assault to pursue civil claims. Her complaint detailed years of rape, groping, and sexual coercion by a prison doctor and three correctional officers at two separate upstate prisons between 2014 and 2017.

Among her alleged abusers was correction officer David Stupnick, who was arrested in 2020 for a criminal sex act involving another incarcerated woman. Stupnick has since been named in at least 20 other lawsuits under the ASA, each describing a pattern of sexual abuse, intimidation, and retaliation inside New York correctional facilities.

For Johnson, filing her case was a way to shine a light on a pervasive issue that had remained hidden for far too long. She hoped her story would galvanize public awareness of the systemic sexual violence occurring within state prisons and the urgent need for reform in how these cases are handled.

According to attorney Sonia Allahdad, the lawsuit “hit a wall” because the New York Attorney General’s Office insisted on further identifying information for two of the alleged abusers — even though Johnson had already provided detailed descriptions, including their job titles, physical appearance, and work shifts.

“They’re refusing to provide us with records that could help in that search,” Allahdad said.

This lack of cooperation is not unique to Johnson’s case. Lawyers representing multiple ASA plaintiffs have reported similar obstacles, with state agencies withholding personnel files that could identify abusers. As a result, survivors — many of whom are in poor health or still coping with trauma — face years-long delays before their cases even reach the courtroom.

Meanwhile, the contrast between state-level ASA lawsuits and those filed against New York City has become striking. While several city cases have already entered settlement negotiations, attorneys estimate that state prison cases could take up to a decade to resolve.

Remembering Sierra Johnson’s Advocacy

Though Johnson did not live to see the outcome of her case, her courage continues to inspire survivors and advocates alike. Her attorney described her as a woman of strength, eloquence, and empathy — someone who “didn’t even realize how amazing she was.”

Her lawsuit will continue posthumously, with any damages awarded to her estate, of which her teenage daughter is the beneficiary. For many, Johnson’s story serves as both a call to action and a painful reminder of how slowly justice moves for those who have already endured so much.
